Medical Cover in Vietnam

If you're planning on relocating long-term to Vietnam you may well have organised your accommodation and employment already, but you might not have considered what you are going to need in terms of medical cover once you are in the country. Goodhealth has all the necessary information, and can help arrange a full insurance plan for you, whatever your circumstances.

Vaccinations

  • Diphtheria
  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid

For longer visits you should also consider:

  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Hepatitis B
  • Tuberculosis
  • Japanese B encephalitis
  • Rabies

* You should consult your doctor before travelling for current requirements. All travellers should also ensure that their tetanus and polio shots are up to date.

Health Care

There are private hospitals of a reasonable standard in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City which have English-speaking staff, and smaller medical centres elsewhere, but facilities tend to be poor and there are often shortages of medicines and medical equipment. It is highly recommended that all expats take out private medical cover for the duration of their stay.

Political Concerns

Vietnam is a one-party communist state where political dissent is suppressed and there are restrictions on freedom of speech and religion.

Other Risks

Dengue fever, spread by mosquitoes, is endemic in Vietnam and can be fatal. There's no vaccination available so try to avoid being bitten by using a DEET-based insect repellent.

There have been human fatalities associated with avian influenza in Vietnam and you should avoid contact with poultry, such as at live produce markets.

Keep your valuables, especially your passport, safe at all times. Trains and buses are favourite places for pickpockets to operate.

Roads and vehicles throughout Vietnam are poorly maintained, driving conditions are hazardous and road rules routinely ignored. Be extra vigilant when crossing roads or driving around the country.
